Design and development of the P22 website. Upon leaving P22 the website contained more than 300 product pages. These were generated using a content management system written by myself using the Pylons web framework.

Product pages, as seen in the example above, included a Javascript interface to handle the multiple ordering options available within each family.

The product pages also linked to the P22 Typecaster™. The version of the Typecaster seen above was redesigned by myself to handle XML generated by the Pylons CMS.

One of the more interesting magazines i've seen is Slanted magazine from Germany. Often they run typographic themes, and P22 has been asked several times to contribute work. I designed the right hand page in the image above for Slanted #06 - Signs, Symbols, Ornaments.

Zebra was originally designed by Karlgeorg Hoefer in 1965 for the Stempel foundry in Germany. This unique font was designed as a two-color script face and is now available digitally for the first time. The P22/IHOF release presents six separate fonts based on the original painted drawings and Stempel proofs.

P22 Civilite is a historic font revival. The font is a non-connecting upright handwriting script based on 16th century sources with a lineage going back to Robert Granjon in France and from early Dutch type specimens from the Enschede and Sons Foundry.

Responsibilities included working on the font, creating the Civilite mini-site, as well as supporting graphics for web and press.

In 2004 I took part in a workshop hosted by the type design studio, Underware. The workshop had the theme of graffiti, and it was the participant's job to find a way to vandalize the city with typography. I choose to do a giant poster composed of type, much of which I designed during that week.

One of the first projects that I was asked to work on at P22 was the P22 Deca-Annual Report. The concept was to make a book which showed the inspiration and work of P22 over the last 10 years. Richard Kegler, owner of P22 acted as the client, and I was to design the book under the art direction of Rich's brother Alan. Alan brought Eric Frick, who had done photography for the award winning Ani Difranco CD packaging, to take surreal photos of the P22 staff. The book took over a year to design and print and includes 3 different types of paper, and numerous printing processes. It has won numerous awards, which include being featured in the book Graphis Annual Reports 2006.

Read an interview with Colin Kahn about the book on the Step Design website.
